What to Do Around The Area

Though the main attraction at THE MOOSEHEAD CABIN is the property itself, there are plenty of things in the area to do as well.  Here are just a few suggestions:

This charming waterfront town is about 25 minutes away with
quaint shops and restaurants.

FISH, CLAM, CRAB or OYSTER PICK
Bay Lake has bass and trout. In the spring, the lake is stocked with trout for opening day which begins on the last Saturday of April. Clamming and Oyster hunting can be done on the beaches of Penrose State Park and along the Purdy spit. The season usually runs from March 1-May 31st. Crabbing season varies.

Check with the fish and game department for rules, licenses, changes of dates, etc. (you can order licenses online).

SHOPPING and DINING in GIG HARBOR

Uptown Shopping Center
http://www.uptowngigharbor.com

Just off the Olympic Drive Exit. New outdoor shopping center with restaurants, movie theatre, shops, etc. Just a few of our favorites within UPTOWN CENTER:

SIP Restaurant and wine bar. Upscale dining.
FONDI’s Great pizza. Good for families.
BEN and JERRYS ice cream.
PANERA BREAD. Bakery, lunch items.

Gig Harbor Waterfront Restaurants
Head East off of the Wollochet Drive exit, and down the hill. The waterfront town of Gig Harbor is charming, and full of little shops and small restaurants. One of the best places to eat in Western Washington is right here:

Brix 25
Upscale, fine dining. Voted best of Washington wine list.  Our favorite!

The Tides Tavern
Popular waterfront pub. Unfortunately, no kids allowed. Great burgers.

Anthony’s Restaurant
On the harbor. Seafood. Family friendly.

Puerto Vallarta
Of the several Mexican restaurants in the area, this is our favorite. Up the road from main town a bit. See the website for directions.

LOCAL WINE TASTING, LAVENDER FARM
Trillium Winery (open on weekends only) about 3 minutes up the road.

Fairview country store
Also very close to the cabin (about 3 minutes away) and open on weekends.

OYSTERS
If it isn’t oyster season, you can still pick up a dozen or more fresh oysters from the farm up the road on the Key Peninsula Highway anytime of the year.

STATE PARKS

Penrose State Park
is just up the street (turn right out of the driveway, go to the top of the hill, turn left, and you’re there). It has nice beaches and picnic areas, as well as hiking and exploring trails.

Joemma State Park
Is about 5 minutes by car and also has a very nice beach.

Mt. Rainier
Mt. Rainier is only about 2-1/2 hours from the cabin, and makes for a great day trip.

HOOD CANAL
The hood canal backs up to the East side of the Olympic national Forest, and is some of Washington’s most beautiful scenery. If you feel up for the drive, continue North all the way around Highway 101, which makes a loop around the Olympics where you will reach the Pacific Ocean to the west. This is a long day trip, or can be broken up into two days, with an overnight stay in Port Angeles or the lodge at Lake Quinalt (there are many other places to stop as well).

Visit the brewery or winery along the way:

VISIT TACOMA
There are many things to do just on the other side of the bridge 20 minutes away. Here are a few ideas:

Point Defiance Zoo and Aquarium

Museum of Glass

VISIT SEATTLE
If you’re not from the area, than a trip to the big city is probably worth a day or two. Our suggestion is to drive North up Highway 16 to Bremerton, where you can catch the one hour ferry ride to Seattle’s waterfront:

Washington State Ferry
www.wsdot.wa.gov/ferries/schedules/current/

From there, you are within walking distance of some of Seattle’s best sights. Here are a few:

The Pike Place Market

The Seattle Aquarium
www.seattleaquarium.org

The Seattle Art Museum
www.seattleartmuseum.org

The Seattle Center and Space Needle
Along with the Space Needle, young children will enjoy the Science Center, while older children will not want to miss the EMP (Experience Music Project) and Science Fiction museum. Catch the monorail from the Westlake Shopping Center, just a few blocks up Pike Street from the Pike Place Market.
